Fans of the 2005 film should set a reminder in the diary for the release on March the 2nd of tickets for the UK premier of Kinky Boots. With music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper (yep, that actual Cyndi Lauper), a book by four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, this is set to be a bit of a cracker.

Already a multiple award winner (Kinky Boots won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical, and the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album) the show will open at the Adelphi on the Strand with previews from 21st of August.

Inspired by a true story and based on the Miramax film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, Kinky Boots tells the story of Charlie Price who has reluctantly inherited his father’s Northampton shoe factory. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save the family business from bankruptcy, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola. A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he’s meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible… and discovers that when you change your mind, you can change the world.

Commenting on the show’s London announcement, there was much appreciation for bringing  this very British story back to Blighty. Producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig said: “We are thrilled and deeply honoured to be bringing Kinky Boots back home to British shores, where this inspirational story is set. The show is big-hearted and filled with joy and we trust that it will be warmly embraced by audiences in the UK.” Director and Choreographer, Jerry Mitchell said: “I am delighted to see this big-spirited musical arrive in London. Kinky Boots is very close to my heart, and I am really looking forward to staging it here with a British cast.”

Harvey Fierstein, for those who may need help in placing him, is the book author of La Cage aux Folles (Tony and Drama Desk Awards) among other seriously successful shows. As an actor, he hit the screens in Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day as well as How I Met Your Mother, The Simpsons and Family Guy. Away from the arts, his political editorials have been published in The New York Times, TV Guide and the Huffington Post and broadcast on PBS’s In the Life. Cyndi Lauper (Composer and Lyricist) is a bit of a global superstar. A Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning (for her Kinky Boots score) artist, with 11 studio albums. Jerry Mitchell (Director and Choreographer) received the Tony Award in recognition of his choreography for Kinky Boots, for which his direction was also recognised with a Tony nomination.
